Alison Baroody-Sarboraria, Ph.D.

Hello and Welcome to ABS Writing!

I’d love to get to know you and hear your story. Here is a little bit about me.

Education & Experience

I graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Psychology and earned my Ph.D in Developmental Studies from Purdue University. I completed a two-year post doctoral fellowship at the University of Virginia. Afterwards, I accepted a position at San Francisco State University (SFSU). I moved to the Bay Area and for 8 years I worked as a professor at SFSU in the Department of Child and Adolescent Development. As a professor, I had the opportunity to work with hundreds of students taking my writing intensive courses. I also was a student advisor and served on admission committees. Through out my career in Academia, I published over a dozen peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and have been invited to present around 30 times at peer-reviewed conferences.

Personal Life and Passions

I met my husband shortly after I moved to the Bay Area. We married two years later and now have three beautiful children. As a mother of three, I decided I needed a more flexible schedule to achieve my desired work-life balance. I am taking a break as a college professor, however, I miss the student interaction and helping individuals express themselves through writing. This desire led me to become a writing coach and consultant.

Coaching Style

I have a laid back and thoughtful style of coaching. I like to brainstorm writing ideas through asking questions and doing short activities. This allows me to listen and learn about others’ experiences and passions. As I get to know someone, I am better able to assist them in expressing themselves and selecting writing themes and topics that are relevant and important to them. Others describe me as detailed-oriented, conscientious, and compassionate. I believe that through encouragement, guidance, and meaningful feedback, anyone can be a great writer and tell their story.
